This story of a long-standing partnership reveals Plastokit&#8217;s advanced capabilities in mold design and manufacturing, automation, complex production processes, and meeting the stringent standards of the medical field<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The medical industry is no place for compromises. It demands absolute precision, compliance with strict international standards, full traceability, and impeccable quality. For many manufacturers, these requirements are a significant barrier to entry. But for Plastokit, the southern manufacturing site of Rion, these challenges are precisely where its distinct advantages shine. A prime example is the collaboration, which has been ongoing for over 20 years, with the American giant Thermo Fisher Scientific, a global leader in equipment and materials for laboratories and biobanks. &#8220;It&#8217;s by no means a given that an Israeli manufacturer would produce for an American giant whose production is mostly based in China, Mexico, and the US,&#8221; says Aaron Weiss, an engineer in Rion&#8217;s mold department. &#8220;The deep bond built over the years, and our ability to provide advanced solutions, are what make this partnership a tremendous achievement for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>An International Challenge: Manufacturing for a Global Giant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">At the heart of the collaboration is a series of laboratory products, including complex trays for test tubes and their matching caps. The trays, produced using injection molding, are particularly challenging due to their geometry, which includes many thin-walled ribs that have high-precision requirements for dimensions and geometric tolerances. The trays are required to withstand extreme temperatures and challenging environmental conditions. Their production demands a high level of engineering skill in both the mold design and the injection process itself, to ensure a complete filling of the mold, to prevent weak points (weld lines), and to avoid warpage in the final product. Rion and Plastokit not only manufacture the products but also designed and built a complete set of new molds, all while incorporating ideas and engineering improvements that elevated the quality of the product and the manufacturing process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>Conformal Cooling: the Technology that is Key to Efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">One of the most significant innovations implemented in the molds for Thermo Fisher was the use of Conformal Cooling technology: the 3D printing of mold inserts containing custom-shaped cooling channels. The cooling stage is often the longest part of the injection molding cycle, and optimizing it significantly shortens production time. This technology allows for the design and printing of steel inserts with cooling channels that perfectly follow the product&#8217;s complex geometry, unlike the straight channels created using traditional machining processes. The result: more uniform, rapid, and efficient cooling, leading to up to 50% savings in cycle time, a marked improvement in product quality, and adherence to tighter tolerances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">&#8220;The transition to Conformal Cooling technology began out of necessity,&#8221; explained Omer Kraus, Plant Manager at Plastokit. &#8220;Previously, to cool complex areas, we used inserts made of an alloy with excellent thermal conductivity, but it was found to be carcinogenic during its processing, and its use was subsequently banned by the client. We sought a safer, alternative solution and were among the first in Israel to adopt this technology. Today, many of our molds incorporate it in their design and manufacturing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>End-to-End Automation: Meeting Growing Market Demands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The growing demand for these medical products, combined with the requirement to add laser marking for individual identification (both 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes), especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitated another leap forward in production capabilities. At Plastokit, a dedicated, advanced automation cell was established, consolidating several processes that were previously performed manually. The process, managed end-to-end using automation, includes assembling a marking jig to the tray, pad printing the company logo, laser marking a unique barcode and QR code on each tray for full traceability, and a computer vision system that inspects the marking quality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">&#8220;The new automated system increased throughput fivefold, allowing us to meet the growing demand and free up employees for more complex tasks,&#8221; said Omer. &#8220;Laser marking is also a &#8216;greener&#8217; process that replaces stickers, saving paper, adhesives, and solvents, while ensuring a durable mark that doesn&#8217;t wear or fall off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>A Culture of Quality and Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Success in manufacturing for a demanding field like the medical industry rests on solid foundations of quality, professionalism, and collaboration. Plastokit holds the ISO 13485 certification, the international standard for quality management systems for medical device manufacturers, and it adheres to strict cleanliness procedures in its production areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">&#8220;Our advantage lies in our broad professional capabilities and our passion for challenges,&#8221; conclude Omer and Aaron. &#8220;While we don&#8217;t operate certified cleanrooms, we perform most manufacturing for the medical field in separated, filtered environments, set to the highest standards.
